XP Levels - How does it work?

Track your progress, level up, and stay on top of your game

What is XP?

XP (Experience Points) is Macadam's progression system. Every action you take in the app can earn you XP, which contributes to your overall level. The more active and consistent you are, the more XP you accumulate, and the higher your level grows.

How do I earn XP?

XP can be earned through a variety of activities across the app. Here are all the ways you can collect XP:

  • 🚶 Steps: Earn XP based on your daily step count

  • 🗺️ Macadam Adventures (Challenges): Complete Challenges to earn XP rewards

  • 📍 Map: Explore and interact with the map to collect XP (Coins and Spots)

  • 📅 Perfect Week: Validate your steps all days of the week for a bonus XP reward

  • 🔥 Streaks: Stay consistent day after day to build streaks and earn streak XP

  • Daily Challenges: Complete your daily challenges to earn XP every day

💡 Tip: The best way to maximize your XP is to combine multiple sources; don't rely on just one!

How do XP levels work?

Your total weekly XP determines your level. Levels are recalculated every week, so your level at any given time reflects your activity over the past 7 days.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Your level is reassessed every Monday, based on the previous Monday→Sunday period

  • Levels can go up or down depending on your weekly XP

  • The system is designed to reward consistency over time

How to keep your current level

Reaching a new level is great, but keeping it matters too. Each week, you need to earn a minimum amount of XP to hold your current level.

Here's how it works, using this Level 3 as an example:

  • The progress bar shows the XP needed to reach Level 4

  • The midpoint of that bar is your safety threshold (1000 XP)

  • If you reach at least the midpoint by the end of the week → ✅ You keep Level 3

  • If you fall below the midpoint → ⬇️ You drop to Level 2

💡 In practice: If you need 2,000 XP to reach Level 4, you must earn at least 1,000 XP during the week to stay at Level 3.

Can my level go down?

Yes. Because levels are recalculated weekly, a less active week can result in a level decrease. This is intentional; your level is a reflection of your current activity habits, not just your all-time performance.

That said, level changes are controlled and gradual; you won't lose multiple levels from a single quiet week.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is my XP recalculated?
Your XP and level are recalculated every Monday, summarizing your activity from the previous week (Monday to Sunday).

Do I lose my XP if my level goes down?
Your level may adjust week to week, but your XP history is always saved. A level adjustment simply reflects your recent activity compared to previous weeks.

Which XP source gives the most points?
Each XP source contributes differently depending on your activity. Combining multiple sources, such as daily challenges, streaks, and steps, is the most effective way to maximize your weekly XP.

What happens if I don't open the app for a week?
If no activity is recorded during a week, no XP will be earned for that period, which may result in a level decrease at the next recalculation.
